I would love to try one of the 44M-6's or other later MC versions, just to see if I like it better than my 44M. Plenty sharp wide open and gets more contrasty as I step it down a little. ( I know that may seem sad to those of you who really have the good stuff ) It is a 7812970 and I think it is still one of my better lenses. This doesn't prove anything one way or the other about the zero serial numbers, but I thought I should give my impressions. Jeff Zen wrote: To follow up: I have compared results from my 7687150 Helios 44M with the 093622 44M and the '76 model is definitely superior in sharpness and contrast. On the other hand, it's always possible that some lame duck opened the lens and assembled it in a wrong way, so 0xx SN doesn't mean 100% guarantee of perfect copy. Same level as Biotar (maybe even slightly better, but I didn't make any scientific comparision). Serial number beginning by zero means that the lens is a sample made for factory syndicat leaders (it should be optically good copy): The exception are lenses made in 2001-2009, but Helios 44M discontinued in the eighties. If this is true then when was the KMZ Helios 44M pictured below made? I have another KMZ 44M with a 7687150 serial number.
